We work for a client who has a high-end home that has been remodeled twice over. In each remodeling project, we worked with the owner to help him and his wife plan out the major interior and exterior remodeling projects. In the current project, he and his wife hired an architect to help them figure out what they wanted to do in their home. They hired us to help them design their spaces, and we did.
As an interior designer, I do a lot of things: I do my own decorating, paint, and design a lot of flooring. But I also do a lot of design work for people. I just completed a design for a guy who had a brand new home built. I was able to work with his wife (who was a painter) on the color scheme. I also worked with her on her kitchen tiles. So it was a new experience working directly with the owner’s wife.
The job is one that calls for a lot of creativity, but also accuracy. In some ways I’m surprised there hasn’t been a lot of “no painting” homes that have been built in Milwaukee. The city is a bit conservative when it comes to the design of new construction homes, so it makes sense that you can’t go wrong with a redo. The work I do for other homeowners is just as important.
The owner of a home built in Milwaukee did some work for me. As a result I have seen much more “no painting” homes than I’d have thought. I’m not sure if it’s because the city doesn’t like new construction homes, or if it just is that there aren’t many of them. Either way I’ve noticed a lot more homes with traditional redone work surfaces and kitchen cabinets.
In general, most homeowners I know are a bit more open to the idea of updating their interiors than others. Sometimes it makes sense to go with a new paint job, as in the case of our own kitchen. Other times it makes more sense to go with a new sink. But the majority of us just want our kitchen to look good and be as functional as possible.
This is a good point. In my own home I have a few pieces of furniture that I like to use that are hard to change. The kitchen sink is one of them. It is a bit of a pain to change the way it looks, but it is a necessary necessity. It is a bit of a pain when you have to move the sink every couple of years or so, but we all have to deal with this at some point.
There are a few other pieces of furniture that are more difficult to move. The bathroom sink is a one-time job that has to be done. It is a bit of a pain to get it out of its cabinet, and usually it is just a piece of junk anyway. If you replace it with a new sink, the problem of the old sink being in your house is fixed.
