It’s a little unclear what the difference is between a business and a creative/educational place but I was talking to a friend who was working at a small interior design firm and he said that when you design, you should take a look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself who you are becoming. When you become a business, you have to be the best you can be, and when you become a creative/educational place, you have to be the best you can be.
The thing that separates a business and a creativeeducational place is not just your physical appearance but your attitude toward what you do. The more you have a negative outlook on what you do, the less likely you are to do it well. The same is true of interior design.
This is why so much of our interior design is so important; it’s not just what you put on the walls, it’s how you put your personal stamp on it. It doesn’t matter if your clients or students are going to take the time to inspect your work. It doesn’t matter if you need to hire a new receptionist; it’s about how you treat them.
In the same way, no design is just a matter of your attitude and what you put on the walls. That is the entire reason why it is so important that we have the right attitude toward our interior design. If we don’t, if we try to do it wrong, we are going to end up with a bad interior. This applies to anything, even your decorating choices.
This is basically the point of my previous post. Most interior designers start by going through their clients’ rooms looking for issues, problems, and things that could be improved. The real question for us isn’t what we should do, it’s how we get from there to where we want to be. That means we have to focus on the things that we can control most of all.
